"Minions" Look To Keep Universal Dominating Box Office
Universal Studios has shown to be a force to reckon with this year at the domestic and worldwide box office. With not one but two huge releases, Universal Studios has earned box office gold. First it was Furious 7 that ran the box office table in April when it raced its way through box office records to make it the 3rd highest grossing movie of all time behind only James Cameron's films Titanic and Avatar respectively. It also set the record for reaching $1B the fastest in just 17 furious days that would soon be beaten by Universal's next release, Jurassic World.
Jurassic World accomplished the feat of $1B in thirteen days, four days faster Furious 7, and has had incredible staying power by dominating the box office all four weeks in its release. Not even Disney/Pixar's Inside Out could slay the beast of Jurassic World. With the release of Minions, the spinoff film about the loveable gibberish speaking sidekicks that were featured in the Despicable Me animated features, Universal looks like it will do it again.
Minions is tracking to take a three-day gross in upwards of $120M, having already taken in $46M in little over a day of being released. If the numbers stay on coarse it would make it the No. 2 highest grossing animated opener of all time, behind only Shrek The Third which grabbed $121.6M in 2007. Minions would be taking the #2 spot currently belonging to Toy Story 3 which saw $110.3M in 2010. Not only would it capture that coveted spot, but it would make it biggest opener in the Despicable Me franchise.
